#6: KFC Japan Is Finger Lickin' Good (June 19)
Today for lunch I took the subway one station over between classes to try the Japanese KFC, which I had been itching to try ever since I got accepted for this trip in March, and today finally got to experience in all its glory! The menu is much different: no mashed potatoes, no gravy, no green beans, and no mac-n-cheese (and no disgusting Chizzas!), but way more chicken burgers types, a boneless chicken tender type, choco-pies, biscuits that look like tall donuts, chicken nuggets, fries, chicken twisters, melon soda, cranberry lemonade, and a whole bunch more that I'll need to try on return visits!
I got boneless chicken tenders (called Kernel Crispies), a biscuit, coleslaw, and melon soda. At the kiosk you can build your order with all kinds of combinations, so you can get exactly what you want and nothing you don't. The Kernel Crispies were DELICIOUS. Especially dipped in the coleslaw. I don't know if they were made with the 11 herbs and spices or not, but they sure tasted like chicken perfection. And no messy bones or grisly parts. Comparing to the U.S, I think while they threw out most of the familiar menu items (mac-n-cheese, green beans, gravy, mashed potatoes), who wants that stuff with fast food anyway! With this you get chicken or a chicken-burger, and something else tasty like fries or biscuits or a choco-pie (I need to try one!) with a special soft drink. I'm definitely going back soon to try more of the menu.
Dinner was also pretty delicious: Creamy Ham Carbonara from the Gran Piatto Italian place just down the street from my dorm where I've been twice now, the first time on Sunday to get roasted duck. It's so excited that I get to go to whatever restaurant I want each day and try stuff--I could never afford that time and money back home! But I get to be Phil Rosenthal for six weeks in Japan and it's an exciting, delicious adventure every day I'm jumping out of bed looking forward too! This is an amazing trip!!
To travel, eat, and learn--and have it all funded--what a gift!
